During your first session, we will review standard information such as confidentiality and expectations for telehealth sessions. I will then walk you through an intake. This is where I will ask you "all the things" so that I can gain a wide variety of knowledge about you in a very short period of time. This will start with why you are coming to therapy and any symptoms that might be causing you distress. There will be time for you to ask any questions that you might have. This session will be a little longer to get a full understanding of your needs and how I can help.
Every session after will be 50 minutes, and I recommend in the beginning, we meet once a week for the first six weeks to keep up the momentum we see in session. Payment is collected at the end of your session via your client portal account in Simple Practice.
Maybe you’ve seen therapy on TV or in movies, and it seems like someone is always sitting/laying on a couch, crying, while I mutter things like “how does that make you feel?” That’s not what’s going to happen. You know why you’re here. I know how to help you. It’s that simple. We may talk about the big things you thought you weren’t ready to talk about; we may talk about the guy who cut you off in traffic today. In session, you’re guiding the conversation.
I use an integrative form of therapy which focuses first and foremost on the relationship between myself and my client. When my friends or family ask me what they should look for in a therapist, my answer is the same every time and has absolutely nothing to do with counseling theories or treatment activities. My answer is simply, “Find someone who you can’t wait to share your story with, like a friend. For therapy to work, you’ve got to trust them and when something hits the fan, their one of the first people you want to talk about it with. You want their guidance and help navigating it.”
Focusing on the therapy relationship allows me to know what activities will work best for you (your child) and lets me use a wide variety of different approaches so that you (your child) can achieve the relief they so desperately want and need. We are going to laugh and cry. I will give you everything I have during your session and my only request is that you are prepared to do the work outside of sessions too. This “work” might being practicing a new coping skill, reading about your diagnosis, journaling, or having a difficult conversation with someone.
